I just signed up for the "virtual march" against genocide in Darfur, and I'm hoping you'll join me. You can sign up online at:

Over 400,000 civilians have already died in Darfur. But, almost 2 years after the United States officially recognized it as a "genocide," almost nothing has been done to stop the killing.

A relatively small United Nations peace keeping force (which wouldn't even require new US troops) could protect civilians, stop the violence, and help a real peace process begin. But it won't happen if world leaders, including ours, don't stand up and demand it.

So this week, thousands of concerned Americans will gather in Washington to tell Congress and President Bush to support a real international peacekeeping force - and to do it now. To help show the national media how many voters support this call, MoveOn is organizing this virtual march.

They'll present all our signatures and comments at the big rally, and they're aiming to get 250,000 "virtual marchers" by the end of the week.

Darfur is a big deal that no one really hears about.  I wonder if the website my fellow students made last quarter on the Darfur issue still exists or if it was already taken down.  I'll check.  ;-)

They did have a real one -- they were just encouraging signatures in addition.

I think a big problem is all the marching and protests in the world aren't causing any action, are they?   There've been anti-war protests for 3 years and noone seems to care, so motovating people is more and more difficult.  We don't have any great civil leaders that are really getting peoples attention and making things happen, do we?   I think it's pretty cool when Bono is trying to give money to Africa (although it's misguided slightly) and I think that Al Gore androiding his way through speeches has his heart in the right place -- but really, why should I be bothered?   I still can get my mocha double frapachino for 4 bucks and I don't even need to get out of my car.

It doesn't shock me that most of people don't even know where Darfur is. The media doesn't spend that much time covering it, the politicians don't talk about it and the UN got its hand full of problems already.

Sudan is a country that has oil & natural gas. But there isn't anything in the Darfur region (not even diamonds). It's not in any major world power's interest to take care of Darfur.

The situation is not going to change just because some singer guy shakes hands with some other dude, or give 1, 2 millions bucks to a place that people die everyday because of who they are (not what they did). The whole world needs to raise awareness in this crisis.

Most people are too busy with their own lives to worry about someone dying in the street next to them let alone half way around the world -- those Dancing with the Stars episodes I've got tivo'd aren't going to watch themselves.

I know. I am not asking people to do fly over there to give blood or give money. I just hope more people would know that our lives in the US, compare with many places, countries in the world, it's as closed to heaven as it gets. (if there is such place...)

You were thinking when to watch your tivoed "dancing w/ stars," where most of the people in the world worried what was for dinner. When i was in the East coast, some people i met had never been to the other side of Mississippi river. I am Atheist, because I believe that if there is a god, he/she is also too busy watching American Idols.
