Good beer selection. Not too pricey (1 bottled beer, 1 beer on tap, 1 glass of wine for a little over $13). The crowd is slightly older. A small, chill bar to hang out at with friends. 2 dartboards in the back and a clean bathroom. I will be back!
One of the few places I actually LOVE in Sac.
I never get tired of it and better yet it never gets tired of me
I can spend a whole day (ok a whole overcast day) sitting on the tiny patio out front drinking
All of the bartenders are great and so are the owners.
I have a lot of great memories thanks to the Bonn Lair, and many of them are not fit for publication
I love the fact that its beer and wine only (Streets should have stuck with that formula)
I love the fact that you generally know some if not all of the people in there
I love the fact that you can still win the trivia when you're drunk (it's not as hard as Streets)
I love the fact that occasionally there are hot British guys there
I love the fact that its tucked away in East Sac but still easily accessible from downtown (walking distance that is)

Unarguably one of the best in town. Now that I'm getting to be an old fart, I like this place more and more. I want my quality, imported beers and I want the taps that they come out of to not be rancid (I'll refrain from pointing fingers for now). I want to be able to both carry on a conversation with friends without having to scream into one another ears AND then be able to shriek with laughter as the night progresses. I want to be able to go there straight from painting, yoga or work, or for one last drink after a fancy-pants night.
Bonn Lair fits the bill on all of these. And, I LOVE that I can bring a pasty or pizza in from the places nearby.

The Twisted Thistle on tap alone makes this a five star establishment, its frothy, hoppy, deliciousness is always amazing. However, the alone is not what rates Bonn Lair a 5 star establishment. As soon as you walk in, its comforting. The bar is small, but amply stocked with a wonderful selection of beers and there are numerous cozy places to tuck away with a group to chat. The bartenders and patrons are all extremely friendly. Weekends can be a bit crowded by groups that never seem to otherwise frequent the place, so if you want a quiet evening I suggest a weeknight.

Belgian beer on tap, friendly bartenders, and Billy Bragg. Not annoying like some places. Still have to check out trivia night. The food is delicious too...
I love this bar! It's perfect biking distance from my house for my beer cravings. The beer selection is wonderful - much better than Coors or Bud (not a fan of either)
They had all the Euro Cup games on so it was great! Always and interesting crowd too!
I end up going there 1-2 times a week
This bar is beautiful. It's kind of like a hallway with it's set up and only has a few barstools, but there is a cool outdoor patio and game area. The staff have great accents (authentic?), the beer selection is great, and the ambiance is fucking charming. I used to come here with Sacramento State music majors and I miss it. If you're in Sacramento visiting people, or with your friends, this is a really fantastic place to enjoy each other's company.

I finally made it over here the other night, after months and months of driving by. It is easy biking distance from my apartment, so I foresee a summer of coming here regularly.
This definitely feels like a pub in England, which is great. It reminded me of a place I went to in York. It is cozy and comfortable.
Their food is great, and I love that they have Strongbow cider on tap. My handsome companion and I shared the fish and chips and "The Bulldog" (sausage on a bun with grilled onions). I have tried fish and chips all over this town and these were definitely the best. The sandwich was great too, and a bargain at $5.
Major bonus points for being able to watch the footy. Too bad we had to see Liverpool score an own goal. *sniff*

Another good vibe place in Sacramento. Friendly barkeeps and patrons (for the most part). I recommend trying the Maredsous 8 when you're not patient enough to wait for a pour of Guinness..Good stuff. I don't smoke but hanging out in the back can be pretty damn entertaining. A great place to just relax, throw some darts, or just hang out.

The dense crowd wouldn't have bothered me so much if it didn't keep pushing me into the danger zone of the dartboard. Drunks + metal darts + my soft body = Not Good. Maybe if I bribed the guy throwing the darts, he could clear the crowd a bit so I could get a drink...
Given the heavy crowd, the 2 bartenders were doing a great job of serving up drinks and making change quickly. The Scottish decorations meshed well with the dark wood, creating a comfortable feel.
Nothing outstanding, but a solid bar for a pint.
Trivia: In Scottish, "lair" refers to a burial-plot in a graveyard. Maybe the restaurant name indicates that you'll go to that plot a happy person if you first have a night in the pub... :)
Trivia 2: No, you're not hallucinating. My original write-up was mistakenly about a different business I was at that night. What can I say; I was having a great time.

So Ive resisted reviewing the Bonn Lair based on what I thought was an already well established universal happiness with the place amongst the 40+ reviewers to cover this smashing bar. My experience at the bar last week has forced me to chime in with yet another glowing review.
I saddled up to the bar with a coworker one afternoon after sneaking out of work a bit early and dove into to the always wonderful Alagash White. The coworker and I somehow drifted onto the subject of particle physics of which I knew little and he knew quite a bit from his days back in college. I was asking lots of questions in an effort to get my head around the concept and was assisted by the bartender in my quest who was something of an armchair expert herself.
That my friends is an example of the community one can find at a great neighborhood pub. You walk in sit down and launch into entertaining (time waisting) conversation only to be joined in by someone you don't know that adds to the fun. The Bonn Lair will remain my go to spot when the cubicle walls begin to close in and I need to escape this job.

I really like this place. It is awkwardly designed because the lot is so long and skinny, getting past the bar is sometimes a bit of a challenge. I love the beer selection, mostly dark beer. I noticed the crowd was mainly between about 23 and 42, depending on the day. It has a very English pub feel. The last time I was there, the bar tenders made me laugh pretty hard with witty banter with a few regulars.

At this point, I guess you could call me a regular. This a place for beer-lovers, nerds, people who don't like meat-market-bars, and other assorted locals. Cozy is the right word to use here. Friendly? I think the male bartenders (the gals are great) are trying to be really "Euro" to match the football posters and Guinness ads on the walls, so they avoid friendliness at all costs. But the clientele is great and it's what keeps me returning. These are my people, my neighbors, my beer-drinking cohort. I must add that I like that this place isn't overly crowded. Please don't come unless you are awesome. Thank you.

I.love.pub. No really, I do. A couple of Faves and I decided to do a lil Pub-Belly-Crawl a couple of weekends ago and I must say, this place is definitely a real gem! The set up is straight forward. Small booths as you walk in to the left with a lil patio set up right in the front (it's fairly covered so you're kind of incognito). The bar is directly ahead to the right. A few bar stools with very friendly regulars. The vibe of the bar is very chill....I'm assuming the yuppie asshats that have taken over Streets haven't heard about this place yet? Maybe we should start lying a little..hmm...
I was already a pitcher of Guinness in before I got here so I didn't catch the name of the light colored beer I tasted before I ordered. It did have a very lavendar flavor to it- real nice but my palette was already suited up for some creamy stout-goodness. We ordered our pitcher after talking it up with one of regs (even HE had an accent! A very cool Scottish Brogue)...set up shop in the back where a couple of couples were already playing darts.
The bathroom was actually where we wanted to go first. Smallish bathroom that is one drunken piss away from being gross. The night was still young :) Basically a hole in the wall where a shitter happens to be. YOu can completely hear everything being said outside the door while you're squatting above the toilet.
From conversation afterwards I gathered that the mens bathroom had both a shitter, as well as a urinal. I don't think there's a stall that separates the two...basically means one drunk guy can poo while conversing with the drunk guy who is peeing? I don't know what makes this pertinent information, but maybe the boys out there in yelp land want to know...and knowing is half the battle!
Anyways...I was starving while there and a little upset that we missed the dinner menu (especially after reading April G's review!). I was told that we were welcome to try Pizza Guys next door and bring the pizza on over to the bar...unfortunately, they were closed too.
There is a lil door in the back, right outside of the dart area, where there are tables and a slightly covered booth where you can smoke and commingle with handsome, drunk boys.
All in all, the place is nice, clean...friendly staff...great beer on tap. It's an inviting place and all members of my Belly Crawl agree that it's a KEEPER! :)

This is a terrific place to unwind after trying workday and relax. Almost anyone and everyone is willing to talk to you and share a laugh...and the laughter is abundant here. You can enjoy a cold pint of European beer and forget all your cares while you go with the flow of some bizarre tangent of conversation that may evoke big laughs in some and sighs of disgust in others. This is not a place for the squeamish or starchy. The humor can sometimes be twisted and the people eclectic. Bring a smile and an open mind.
Ive tried nearly all brews and most are fantastic. I like the Alagash the best. The wine is on the pricier end and aren't the best picks. No hard alcohol is served here. But some like it that way.
Writing this review makes me think I need to go pay them a visit :)
What a great place to meet random people and enjoy a great beer. The bartenders are prompt and very friendly; if you don't know what you want to drink they can usually suggest something you'll like. And if you don't like to carry cash (I am one of the people that eschew any form of payment besides plastic) don't be put off by a card minimum. Just buy $20 worth of tokens and toss them into your purse. These beer chips come in handy when you've had a rough day, just plop one down and another round appears!
It can get pretty crowded on a weekend night, but don't worry, the crowds are awesome. I have, on a few occasions, sat down with randoms a their tables and enjoyed a a loud and boisterous night. If you're into darts then head to the back where you can play a good game of cricket. Board games more your thing? They've got tons of them to take out.
All in all this is one of my favorite places to chill in Sac. No need to get super dressed up but if you happen to wander in after an early night at the Park, don't worry. No one is here to judge, so just loosen up, have a pint and relax.
It's a very nice pub. I don't have children, but I'd consider the bartender as a mother in the blink of an eye. If she ever needs a father for any future kids, please count me in!!!! She is the epitome of gorgeous. And I was there only once, and I am afraid to go back as I don't want to make an ass out of myself as I drool all over her bar, the floor, and her.

My favorite bar in Sacramento. The people who frequent this fairly genuine English pub are unfailingly friendly and polite. The same can be said of the staff.
Victoria B. is absolutely right to use cozy and unpretentious to describe this gem, and it IS small, which actually is a plus in my book. Unless you go here on St. Patrick's Day however, you should still be able to get adequate service no matter how crowded it gets.
If you enjoy drinking with nice people who enjoy drinking, this bar is for you!

I really did enjoy this place a lot. It kind of felt like I was drinking pints in England (Yes, I know that's the point) but I was really diggin a change of pace from Modesto. I wasn't thrilled with the beer selection but ordered up my ole faithful Stella. Sat around, drank beer, had some great conversations... that's what this place is good for.
They have a front and back smoking patio and apparently they serve food? Yeah.. don't quote me. I do remember loving the smell of sweet cigar smoke coming from the front.. that was plus for me.
So roll in... drop your coat the rack and pull up a stool.. it's a kick place.
Only 3 stars because I can't drink Jager here... dammit
I agree with what a lot of people of have said about Bonn Lair - very laid back, has that "grad student" vibe about it. It feels like hanging out in my own living room (if my living room had awesome beers on tap). In some ways its the opposite end of the spectrum from Streets - cozy, unpretentious - no overwhelming crowds or meat market environment. It is a bit small, which is why only four stars. An underrated East Sac gem.

I never have had a bad time here! It's so perfectly a 'neighborhood' bar, it's hard to not go in just to grab a beer or a glass of wine any 'ol day. I run the risk of sounding like a lush, but I find myself finding any excuse to drop in! Everyone is so friendly and they have so many different kinds of wonderful beer! It's also a very cozy atmosphere, with a front and back patio for you smokers. Tv's everywhere to watch whatever soccer game is on! FUN, FUN, FUN!

I have been here multiple times and love the vibe of this place. Its just a tiny place with no frills, you go to drink and hang out with friends, play darts, and maybe watch the occasional soccer game on the regular size tv (thats right no "look how cool my bar is with its enormous tv and no soul" here). The beers on tap are great, however i stick mainly to newcastle, so ive only sampled a few of them. This is how a real pub should be, not the frat party that streets of london has become.
The only real problem i have is the dart boards are kind of cramped in the back next to the bathrooms, however this turns into a major plus once 3-4 speckled hens are swimming around in your bladder. Ive heard they get their food from the place next door, and some of the other stuff is just frozen, boxed stuff, but who cares, its bar food...after a few beers i'd be happy with the crumbs at the bottom of the toaster!

So this is a review for a place I have been frequenting for years but almost exclusively on Sunday nights. I don't really have anything against this place the other 6 nights a week but I love Trivia Night at The Bonn Lair.
Sure the questions are easier than other trivia nights. Sure they take too long reading the questions as well as tallying the ballots. Sure the place is always a sweltering 95 degrees 365 days a year. I don't care. I just keep coming back.
The Bonn Lair has an excellent sellection of beers. The bartenders are always friendly and accomodating. The fish and chips are superb but its hard to screw up fried foods. I love the fact that they have a front and back patio to service my smoking needs. They also have off street parking for those of you who want that cozy parking lot feeling.
You know. After writing this I think maybe I should frequent this place another day of the week. Maybe.

I may not know owner Dave Boyet personally, but sometimes I feel like his pub, the Bonn Lair, is an extension of my own home. Since I stumbled upon it about eight years ago, it's been the go to place for me to relax with friends, grab an after dinner drink with a date and even throw an unofficial Yelp event or two.
The BL is located next to the La Trattoria in East Sac but within stumbling distance of the grid for Midtowners. It's a cozy, traditional British-style pub that's graced Sac with it's presence since roughly the mid-90's and quickly developed into a favorite neighborhood watering hole. The bar itself exudes a masculine feel- long wooden booths, an assortment of sport memorabilia and a backroom outfitted with darts. In addition, the front end is equipped with a small patio for the overflow and the back end with an open gazebo-like area for the smokers to chill and chat. The atmosphere is relaxed with various locals congregated here and there sucking down their brews, decompressing and BSing about whatever comes to mind. Occasionally the steady hum of conversation is pierced by a loud cheer for some slick rugby move on the telly. I've always found the patrons to be friendly and have come away most nights with a new friend or two. The bartenders Joe, John and (my fav) Mike are quick with the pour and always willing to chat up both the old-timers and the newcomers.
And most importantly, let's not forget the beer...oh the wonderful beer! Bonn Lair carries my favorite- Chimay (aka the nectar of the gods), as well as my trusty standby- Guinness on tap but it also showcases a multitude of great draughts, ales, bottled beers and ciders for every palate (for example Old Speckled Hen, Maredsous, and lambics...quit salivating now...). Most recently I discovered that they also offer a "beer by the bucket" special, how cool is that?
Too much beer and need some grub? The BL is one step ahead of you and has taken the liberty of offering some pub fare to the likes of some fish-n-chips, bangers and the infamous Scotch egg. The staff also doesn't raise an eyebrow or grouse if you prefer more standard eats and wish to bring in some Chinese takeout from next door or a pizza from Pizza Guys just a few doors down. Oh and don't forget on Sundays once you've placated your tastebuds and destroyed your liver with beer at the BL, you can always match wits and engage in a friendly game of Pub Trivia. You gotta love a place that allows a group of girls to christen their trivia team, "The Yoni's." :)
My only gripe about the Bonn Lair...and it's a teeny-tiny gripe, is- what genius decided to install the paper towel pull on the opposite wall from the sink and a mere two inches above the toilet paper dispenser? When one is three sheets to the wind and has a bladder the size of a peanut, the last thing they want to do is mistakenly dry their yoni with a rough industrial grade paper towel. Ouch! Well, my yoni may not love you BL but I sure do! See you soon!

I've only been here once, but the pub feel of this place is just that great. The crowds are chill and so relaxed that I'm surprised how welcoming of a vibe I got. The bucket special they offered, allowed me to sample some beers that I will probably not get anywhere else. That is a definite plus, especially since this is not over priced nor pretentious at all.
When I decide to go watch some football or just chill, I will definitely keep this place in mind.

Love the Bonn Lair, and it loves me. The best place to stop after the drudgery of a long day of class or work. A very diverse crowd including your typical across-the-pond drunks to fit the bill. There's a cute little patio out front to smoke, as well as standing room around the back. The Bonn Lair is what it is: uncomplicated, straight forward, simple. Not much music or lively banter, but if it's a loverly day for a guinness, this pub's your place.
P.S. for those of you who stumble in there a little later in the evening, you can always order pizza and bring it from a block down. brilliant.

Met some friends there last night for a CSUS Grad party... what a cool place! Very tight so prepare to snuggle up like you love EVERYONE in there... great booths and little "nooks" with old English style furniture. European flags and decor everywhere and many of the people in the bar had accents from various parts of the world I'm sure.
The size of the bar gave it a cozy feel. 3.70 for an Amstel Light, not too bad... we discovered the little dart area in the back later in the evening and ended up staying back there most of the night, it was so much fun! What cracked us up is that there is a bench below the boards.... don't be the drunk ass that passes out there! you could get a metal dart daggered into your eyes LOL ... Out very back there is a wooden booth you can relax in, some folks were smoking. The bar was pretty clean, the nice bartender gal came around and picked up our empties, much appreciated!
One of the guys in our group ordered the Scottish Egg as mentioned in Dan's review here... it kind of smelled like breakfast when it arrived since it's egg and sausage... I wasn't brave enough to try it though, I guess I am too considerate to risk barfing all over a public place.... LOL none the less, I have heard they are pretty darn good with some steak sauce on them.
There were 2 male bartenders working and a blonde lady, she was very nice and attentive when serving me. On one of my many trips up to the bar one of the male bartenders started interrogating me about my green shirt with a butt head look on his face...."why are you wearing green...." well.....honestly Mr. Bartender I didn't have you in mind earlier tonight when I threw on something for a trip to the pub with friends.... and no I don't think I am cool because I am Irish... I JUST WANT A BEER PLEASE!!! LOL I guess there was a "green" pub crawl coming through later or something... at least he said sorry for being kind of rude... Other than the weird interrogation I had a great time... and Mr. Bartender if you read this... please just be nice to me next time... it's simple, I order an Amstel, tip you well, we exchange a smile and off I go back to darts.....
The mix of bar patrons was interesting on a Saturday night. Many 30 to 40 somethings and then a bunch of us 20 somethings... everyone seemed happy, friendly and relaxed. The gentlemen at the bar were discussing soccer, some nice ladies playing darts next to us in the back..... great vibe overall.
CHEERS! Great pub to add to your "must get drunk here" list.
Maybe its not fair to review this restaurant now. i mean, lets face it... i went there for a Yelp event and i had a great time. i met cool people, the bartender and i made fun of some guy who packed a sad over the wait for French Fries and a hot chick bought me a Guinness. could life get better? the answer, is only slightly.
Now, i have been a bar-fly of sorts for a long time, but the behavior i exhibited at the Bonn Lair warrants immediate correction. the best thing about the Bonn Lair is, that correction never came. Amen Bonn Lair. maybe one day Name* and i will shenanigize your bathroom again with our drunken antics someday.
Name*, if you're reading this (and i know you are). i can't be held accountable for my actions after three guinni's... and after five you should run. so, the blame clearly lies on your head for my misbehaviors.
*names withheld to protect the not-so-innocent... in fact... guilty.

Highlights include: beer, bros, brews, brahs, bras, brine, brogues.
Lowlights include: lame ass 1 am closing time. lack of a jukebox, (one that wouldn't include "Dirty Old Town" so mouth-breathers can't get their "authenticity" on), weird tweed vibe sometimes, poor price:size ratio of the "banger" (it's a hot-dog, bro, let's supersize that shit if you wanna charge 8 bones.)

It's hard to give a place I love so much yet has so little room for extra people a high rating, because the place gets bad enough when the bar crawls come through. But it's my favorite pub ever. For a tiny place, it seems to fit a massive selection of beers, on tap and bottled. It has a few wines, but no other kinds of alcohol. I don't know that much about the food...I once had a Scottish egg - a hard boiled egg cocooned in fat and sausage, and it was everything a hangover needed. And they have turd-shaped sausages for a buck at the bar that are actually very tasty and not turd-like to the touch.
I don't always eat here because they let me bring in food from the nearby places. That's how laid back they are. Once I couldn't drink enough to fill the minimum $10 charge tab, so they gave me a token for a free drink next time. The seating is great...there's booths, and various benches and stools that can host a good sized gather. There's darts. Every year, they hold a Guinness cooking contest to benefit some kind of disease research society. This place is awesome but don't come on peak nights, please.
One of the few places I like to drink in Sacramento. Chill crowd and hot bartender (oops). Trivia night is fun too but don't be the dumb guy to yell out the answer or the enraged trivial athletes will cast their despising eyes upon you until you mercifully announce "...sorry." (Yea, I know from experience).

Oh, Bonn Lair. You've seen me at my best. You've seen me at my worst.
I lied. You've only seen me at my worst. But WTF, you're a bar, what do you expect.
I love Bonn Lair! And it's not even my usual style. I'm more of an "let's grab a martini at Esquire or Mason's girl," call me snotty but I like my 'tinis and I only like them if I'm surrounded by clear, glitzy bottles and tuxedo'd staff.
I digress. Bonn has what I love. A neighborhood atmosphere, fast service at the bar, and like Erinn L. says, no cocky stripey shirt boys (totally call them that, too!). It almost has a "Cheers" feel about it. Trivia Sundays rock (although, DAMN those questions are hard sometimes!) and you can walk in with friends and grab a beer without feeling judged for wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.
Don't walk into the Bonn and expect to be part of some Saturday Night Fever fantasy or up-in-da-clubbin' it. It's a laid-back, get your beer and sit down and shoot the shat kind of place for those of us who, dangit, just don't want to put on any makeup to go grab some brew!

I joined some friends for Trivia Night (Sunday) at the Bonn Lair last night. This was my first visit to the Bonn Lair. My first impression was - wow, there's a lot of light in here. I was expecting dark and dingy.
The majority of the place is tall backed wooden booths so you really have to search for the people you're joining - they're not immediately visible from the door. I wouldn't head over here with a group larger than 6, because that's about all you can squeeze into a booth.
The trivia quiz was pretty fun - yes, it was taken straight off Trivial Pursuit cards - but I was quite proud to be a member of the "Ron Mexico Doggy Daycare" first place team.
About 10 different beers on tap, most of which I had never heard of. Even more choices in bottles.
If you're a regular you can leave behind a favorite stein to use while enjoying a frosty cold one.
Definitely look forward to visiting again. Besides, I have my winnings to use up.

Oh how I love Bonn Lair! This tiny East Sac bar is Sacramento's "Cheers." After a few visits, not only did Graham (the bartender) know my name, he knew my drink was Guinness - and he's never forgotten. The staff and crowd are always friendly, and there's no meat-market atmosphere. It's comfortable and casual, and the mix of people (from college students to senior citizens) seem to get along just fine.
Bonn Lair offers a variety of seating arrangements - a tiny patio facing J Street, small tables in the raised front area, a row of tall wooden booths for private conversations, some stools at the bar, a cozy living room-style area for groups, a room at the back for darts, and a small back patio. On a busy night, however (and most Saturdays are very busy) you may have to stand with your back to a booth. This little place gets packed.
There's a wide selection of beer and wine, but no liquor. Pub food is available sometimes, but I haven't figured out exactly when. I've heard they get the food from the restaurant next door so maybe it depends on the restaurant's hours. Feel free to bring a pizza from the nearby pizzeria.
Check the bulletin board next to the bar for upcoming events - trivia (every Sunday night), beer specials, sports nights (British football is popular on the TVs here) and oddball events. One night I showed up and discovered the place was being lit entirely by candles. It was "Ye Olde Pub Night" or something like that. The atmosphere was claustrophobic but strangely fun. Come to think of it, every night at Bonn Lair is fun.

The night was moist...err wet last night. We went to the Bonn Lair to meet up with a couple friends, have a few Newcastles, and shoot the shit. A very cozy English pub. It's laid back and mellow. They usually have a couple english "blokes" with bad teeth at the bar impressing folks with their accents. After a couple "Newkies" we start talking like the Brits too. "Ello Guvna" and "titty twistas" were two such phrases.
